Sarah Y. Lin’s “Lux Sacrificium” draws inspiration from the story of Saint Lucia, a young martyr celebrated for her unwavering faith. Legend has it that Lucia, betrothed to a pagan noble, refused to renounce her faith in Jesus. She was subjected to brutal torture, one version of her story was that she had her eyes gouged out and her sight was miraculously restored. Despite her suffering, she would wear a crown of candles to keep her arms free as she cared for the poor by delivering wheat and bread and would secretly deliver food to the fellow followers of The Way in the Catacombs as they faced persecution from the Romans. December 13th is now her celebrated feast day.

Lin’s intricate porcelain sculptures embody this spirit of sacrifice and transformation. This delicate material allows light to pass through, illuminating the sculpture from within and creating a sense of ethereal beauty.

By delving into the depths of human experience, Lin invites viewers to contemplate the silent ruminations we make, the things we surrender, and the parts of ourselves that must be sacrificed to allow for growth and illumination.
